President Mallari designates full-time Data Protection chief
To ensure that the Tarlac State University complies with the provisions of Republic Act 10173, also known as the Data Privacy Act of 2012, President Myrna Q. Mallari has designated a full-time Overall Data Protection Officer to oversee the implementation of the university’s data protection policies.
According to an administrative order dated December 13, 2018, Prof. Gherold C. Benitez, a faculty member of the College of Arts and Social Sciences and a graduate of the TSU Law School, will serve as the university’s Overall Data Protection Officer starting January 2, 2019.
He will replace Dr. Grace Anne C. Hasegawa, who concurrently holds the positions of Overall Data Protection Officer and Planning Director.
In the meantime, however, Benitez is serving as an “understudy officer” and Hasegawa is “ordered to orient, train, coach and mentor” him.
As Overall Data Protection Officer of TSU, he is mandated to perform the following duties and responsibilities:
- plan the conduct of privacy impact assessment for each program, process or measure within the university involving personal data;
- oversee the implementation of privacy and data protection policies of the university;
- plan the holding of trainings on privacy and data protection policies for TSU; and
cooperate with the National Privacy Commission (NPC) and oversee the registration of TSU’s data processing system with NPC.
