5S is a systematic and methodological approach allowing teams to organize their workplace in the safest and most efficient manner. It is also known as a housekeeping system that was develop by the Japanese.

5S stands for Sort (Seiri), Set in order (Seiton), Shine (Seiso), Standardize (Seiketsu), and Sustain (Shitsuke).

Engr. Michelle Rivera of the Environment Management System (EMS) Team, also from the Infrastructure Management Office, lectured on the background of 5S and how it can benefit the offices and colleges of the University.

“High level of quality can be achieved through conducive environment,” Engr. Rivera said.

Afterwards, Ms. Jazzel Manalo, a faculty member of the College of Arts and Social Sciences and a member of the EMS Team, relayed the mechanics for the University-wide 5S Champion search.

The search comprises three categories, namely: College, Laboratory and Office. Three winners per category will be hailed.

Individuals may also compete for the Best Suggestion Award. An X-PS (Expose the Problem and Solution) form must be filled-up and must address issues and concerns in terms of four categories: Information, Process, Assets in the physical environment, and People.

The winners for the Best Suggestion Award will be announced on the Foundation Day of TSU on October and will receive a generous gift certificate. (Ruth Hazel A. Galang - OPAI)
