To better understand the concepts behind an earthquake proof building, the Tarlac State University recently invited Prof. Maurice Teo Ph.D, D.Sc, an expert in installation bearings installed in structures to prevent major damages.

Porf. Teo is the Chairman of the Council of the International Institute of Management. He has over 40 years experience in various businesses and industries, including electronics and semiconductors, toys, telecommunications and construction.

Participants in the seminar included faculty and students from the College of Engineering, College of Fine Arts and Architecture and the College of Science.

The seminar entitled, Earthquake Proof Buildings: The Bolinao Experience, focuses on the study of the creation of an earthquake proof Home for the Elderly run by the Little Sisters of Hope based in Bolinao, Pangasinan by Prof. Teo and his team.

According to the professor, installation bearings were placed beneath the building to help reduce the rigidity of the building during an earthquake. Prof. Teo also added that most of the materials used in the landscape of the area were from the place itself, this he said minimized the cost of the expenses of the building.

Dr. Lolita Sicat, Vice President for Academic Affairs opened the program with her message followed by Dr. Armee Rosel’s introduction of the speaker. Engr. Miriam Galvez was tasked with the closing remarks.
