TSU Joins the National 18-Day Campaign to End VAW
The Tarlac State University through the Gender and Development Office (GAD) Office joined the nation in the observance of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women with the theme “EndVAW Now. It’s Our Duty!” The nationwide celebration spearheaded by the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) started on November 25 and ended on December 12, 2014.
This 18-day campaign is in compliance with Republic Act 10398 declaring November 25 of every year as the National Consciousness Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Children. Under the law, government agencies are mandated to conduct, engage, or participate in activities to put into light the different forms of violence committed against women and children and to disseminate information about women and children’s rights and the laws protecting them.
In line with this, the following activities were conducted:
1. Poster-making contest held last November 22 which was won by Felipe Santiago of the College of Education;
2. Short program held last November 25 to launch the 18-day campaign period highlighted by the messages of Dr. Myrna Q. Mallari and Dr. Lorna Dimatulac on how to eliminate discrimination and end violence against women;
3. Social media campaign where the whole TSU Community was enjoined to support the campaign by changing their Facebook Profile picture with the “End VAW Now” logo;
4. Students through the SSC also expressed their opinion on how to end VAW through Twitter, which also served as a contest. The messages of Jaspher Medina (COE) and Veronica Ann C. Ancheta (COEd) were chosen and said students received cash gift donated by Dr. Mallari;
5. Posting of campaign streamers in all the TSU campuses and wearing of orange T-shirts and;
6. Forum on R.A. 9162 (Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act) held last December 12, with P/Supt Elsa Miranda, Deputy Provincial Director for Administration of the Tarlac Police Provincial Office (TPPO) as the resource speaker and participated by more than 800 students of the university.
The successful campaign was made possible through the support of the GAD coordinators, Supreme Student Council, OPAI and the Administration.
