Tarlac State University officials attend 10th ASEAN Skill Olympics in Vietnam

Tarlac State University officials went to Hanoi, Vietnam to observe the conduct of the 10th ASEAN Skill Olympics held at the massive National Convention Center on October 24-29, 2014. The ASEAN Skills Olympics is a bi-annual event that showcases ASEAN’s youth skills in the fields of : Information Network Cabling, Mechatronics, Mechanical CAD, IT Software Solutions for Business, Welding, Wall and Floor Tiling, Plumbing and Heating, Electronics, Web Design, Electrical Installations, Bricklaying, Cabinet Making, Joinery, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Fashion Technology, Automobile Technology, Cooking, Restaurant Services, Refrigeration and Airconditioning, IT Network Systems Administration, Graphic Design Technology, Industrial Automation, CNC Maintenance and Mobile Robotics. TSU Officials met with a number of Philippine representatives in the field of skills development specifically from Meralco Foundation Inc. and The TESDA. The university also signified interests in joining the completion in the fields identified by the deans of the technological colleges. The skills competition assessed skills competencies by level (skills building upon the other) during the duration of the event. As observers, we were only allowed to witness the conduct of the completion from the opening of the event. We were allowed access to the completion areas. Equipment, facilities and materials were at close observation which gave us ideas and comparison of what we have back in TSU.

 

TSU identified competitive interest in the following:

College of Computer Studies: Information Network Cabling, Information Network Administration, Web Design, IT Software Solutions for Business

College of Technology: Industrial Automation, Mechatronics, Automobile Technology, Electrical Installations, Refrigeration and Airconditioning

College of Engineering: Mechatronics, Mechanical CAD, CNC Maintenance

College of Architecture and Fine Arts: Graphics Design

 

To maximize the stay of the TSU officials, benchmarking activities to technological schools were scheduled to forge possible partnerships in English proficiency, research collaboration, exchange student program, students’ fellowship and faculty exchange. Hanoi Vocational College of High Technology, Hanoi Industrial University, Hanoi Industrial Vocational College and Hanoi Vocational College for Electro Mechanics were among the visited schools. During said visits, there was a sharing of ideas as to the academic status and directions of both parties.

Alumni of TSU Trans-National Education Program in Hanoi treated the officials to dinner and discussed possible support to the university. It was known during the fellowship that TSU alumni hold key positions in business and government offices and acknowledged TSU’s programs that led them to promotions.

In preparation for the ASEAN Integration, the university must be open to change by adopting concepts and practices and develop international standard training facilities. Acquisition of modern training equipment to align graduates to the needs of the industry aside from the possible entry to the skills Olympics.
